|Nice brass fittings and details
Early 20th C.Tibetan Old Mahakala Hand Painted Drum. The brass fittings seem to make this early 20th C, perhaps older. Notice the painting on the side, the disemboweled body showing the intestines is a theme used in a special room. The room is generally darker inside, a lama will be chanting mantras while in meditation. He continues this for many hours, taking small pauses to ring the bell and he will hit the drum so to keep his rythm. When was it painted? Looks good...
Mahakala is a Dharmapala,a protector of religious law. He is always depicted as an extremely fierce and terrifying deity. His purpose is to help in over coming negative obstacles on the path to enlightenment. A compassionate wrathful deity, he appears evil, like a demon, but functions more like a guardian angel.
